He was employed as a farmer, and had previously served for three years with the School Cadets and three months with the High Peak Volunteers. He stated his next of kin as his brother, Francis Dawbarn Stones, of Derby. Five feet six and a quarter inches tall, he weighed 125 pounds, had a dark complexion, blue eyes and brown hair, and belonged to the Church of England.
